I got a guy to sight in my rifle
My momma’s new boyfriend re-binds bibles
Ricky down the road, he resoles Red Wings
Hell, I got a guy for every damn thing
Oh, that ain’t exactly what I’m lookin’ for
‘Cause I’m lookin’ for
Someone to put her tires back in the drive
And if they don’t, then I just might
Lose what’s left of my never-lovin’ mind
I’m damn near down to my last dime
I’m pretty good at breakin’ down a heart
But pickin’ up the pieces is the hard part
She’s searchin’ for someone who’s gonna build it back
But I ain’t got a guy for that
Realllllly not a country music guy, but god damn post Malone keeps hitting these tunes that are something else. This one drew me in immediately because he says “Ricky down the road resoles red wings” and I actually have a pair of red wings I need to send in to be resoled, so he got me.
Then I started to think a bit deeper about the song, and about societal roles. As a guy you’re expected to have a guy for everything. A car guy, a plumber, an electrician, a carpenter, etc, etc. I never got any of that because you usually inherit your “guy” from your dad and that mother fucker has burned more bridges than anyone I know. So at a young age I slowly just learned how to become the guy, and now I’m at a point in life where I feel like I’m almost the guy for everything I could need in life. I can do minor plumbing, I can do minor electrical work, actually as a kid electricity was like the coolest thing in the world to me, so I used to disessemble my toy R/C cars and find other ways to wire the motors myself and make them do other shit. I can do pretty much any carpentry, I can do basic tile work. I can do basic shit on a car too.
I learned all those skills young and continue to practice them. Now as I get older I realize that just being handy or being able to fix anything gets you so far. I’ve learned I also have to be the guy that can give someone guidance, listen to someone vent, be a person who can help someone through the storms we whether in life. I’ve learned to try to become the person that can help people through the “little hells” of life and see the joy in it.
I can’t offer you a guy to fix your feelings, but I can offer a safe place to talk about them, and help figure out the best course forward with you.
I believe whether we realize it or not, whether it’s subconscious or not, women are more drawn to a man that can provide, and not necessarily provide right now, but shows the potential to be able to provide in the future. I know that could be considered a toxic way to think, but at the end of the day I think our monkey brains still think that way from time to time, so I’ve learned to be the guy for that. That being literally anything.
I’m pretty good at breakin’ down a heart
But picking up the pieces is the hard part
She’s searchin’ for someone who’s gonna build it back
But I ain’t got a guy for that
I am the guy for that.
Where the skies are gold not gray,
J.
